A new logo and slogan for an initiative planned by the Upper Merion Township Board of Supervisors to plant 1,000 new trees in the township were introduced today. The slogan, "Shades of Green - 1,000 Trees for Upper Merion Township," curves over the top of a tree in full leaf.
The effort was launched several months ago in conjunction with the Valley Forge National Historic Park where volunteers planted several dozens of trees. Within the township trees are being solicited for planting on public lands. Residents are also being urged to plant trees on their properties.
The Board of Supervisors will recognize residents and business landowners upon making monetary donations and/or the planting of trees upon public and private lands throughout the Township. Monetary donations can be made by residents in living or deceased memory of family, friends, and/or neighbors. The residents can specify the type(s) of trees they desire to donate or the Township can select the trees which are appropriate for the planting location.
Developers will receive recognition under this initiative if a monetary contribution is made for the purchase of appropriate trees for a location in the Township, or the number of trees planted by the developer exceeds the requirements of the landscape ordinance. The caliper/size of the trees must be a minimum of 2-2.5 inches. The trees will be planted by the developer itself or by the selected landscaping firm, and the cost will be borne by the developer. The planting cost is based upon the caliper/size of the trees selected.
On April 24, 2009, the township also celebrated Arbor Day. Upper Merion Township has been named "Tree City USA" for the 33rd consecutive year. This is extremely significant because out of all the municipalities in Pennsylvania, the City of Philadelphia is the only other municipality to achieve this honor of 33 consecutive years.
On April 28, 2009, the Public Works Department received and opened bid proposals for the purpose of purchasing trees for planting on Township owned properties. The price quotation breakdown, type of tree, height of trees and nursery stock are now available on the link below in Adobe PDF format.
