The first phase of the “Single-Use Product Regulations” ordinance prohibiting the distribution and use of single-use carry-out bags, single-use plastic straws (with certain exceptions), and expanded polystyrene food service products by commercial establishments goes into effect on January 1, 2024. The second phase prohibiting the distribution and use of plastic utensils begins on July 1, 2024.
Why the Change?
The need for such regulations arises from growing concerns about environmental sustainability and the harmful impact of single-use plastics on our planet. Single-use plastics are notorious for their negative consequences, from polluting our oceans and landscapes to endangering wildlife.
A Two-Phase Approach
The ordinance is structured in two phases to ensure a smooth transition. The first phase, beginning January 1, 2024, will focus on prohibiting the distribution and use of single-use carry-out bags, single-use plastic straws (with certain exceptions), and expanded polystyrene food service products.
The second phase, set to commence on July 1, 2024, will take the regulation further by prohibiting the distribution and use of plastic utensils.
Preparing for Change
To help the community adjust to these changes, Upper Merion Township is taking proactive steps. One such initiative is distributing free reusable shopping totes printed with a QR code.
